Birgitte Lutfy

A native of Denmark, Birgitte first developed her interest in design by learning to create and sew her own clothing at a young age. This led to a lifelong interest in all things related to design and building, from closet design, woodworking, landscape design & gardening, to metal and glass art.

After moving to Durango, she became a certified master gardener, and worked as a designer for ClosetsPlus. After 5 years of interior design work, she opened Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen in Durango, Colorado, with her husband, Michael. As the designer and project manager for Chimayo’s build-out, she became very interested in working with metal. After receiving a plasma cutter for her birthday, she began creating metal forms, and soon taught herself to weld. This was followed by learning the art of glass fusion.

Her passion is to combine both art forms, using recyclable metal materials and glass fused pieces in one organic piece. The seamless blending of glass and steel gives her work a free-flowing and harmonic style. Not many artists can combine both metal and glass into one art form.

Examples of her work are are on display and available for sale in Chimayo. Other works may be seen elsewhere on this website, and she is currently accepting commissioned work.

Her shop is fully equipped for metal and wood.
